OC House

PLAYA GRANDE, GUANACASTE, CR 2021

The OC house was inspired by vernacular Guanacastecan architecture, specifically the Chorotega ranch. It was strategically located on the lot to capture the northern breezes, seeking interrelation with the environment and under Nancite and Melina trees that provide shade for much of the year. The walls were built using the bahareque technique, a traditional construction system with mud but with improvements in the process, advised by Batsú Arquitectura and Nic Donati from Rancho Mastatal. It combines the metal structure on concrete piles, bahareque walls reinforced with bamboo, wood and polished concrete floors. The teak wood structure roof is "suspended" over a perforated enclosure to keep the house cool, just as traditional Guanacaste houses did.
