OC House
PLAYA GRANDE, GUANACASTE, CR 2021
90 m2
20 masl
Basal Floor - Coastal Influence
Casa OC was inspired by Guanacaste’s vernacular architecture, specifically the Chorotega rancho. The house was strategically positioned on the site to capture northern breezes, promote a strong connection with the surroundings, and sit beneath nancite and melina trees that provide shade for much of the year.
The walls were built using the bahareque technique—a traditional earthen construction method—enhanced through modern improvements, with guidance from Batsú Arquitectura and Nic Donati of Rancho Mastatal.
The design combines a steel structure on concrete stilts, bahareque walls reinforced with bamboo, wood elements, and polished concrete floors. Finally, a teak wood roof structure floats above a perforated enclosure, helping to keep the interior cool—just as traditional Guanacastecan homes once did.
